HOW DOES LACK OF SLEEP AFFECT YOUR SKIN AND WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT

We’ve all heard, or maybe even said, that popular phrase beauty sleep, and there’s actually some truth to that. Not only does lack of sleep impact your overall wellbeing and health, it can also damage your skin health and even cause premature aging. So, in theory, getting more or less sleep does impact your physical appearance. In case you can’t increase your rest-time, there are a few other things you can try to keep the exhaustion out of your skin.

SLEEPING IS THE BEST WAY TO HELP SKIN REPAIR ANY DAMAGE DONE DURING THE DAY. YOUR BLOOD FLOW INCREASES, COLLAGEN PRODUCTION RESTARTS, AND YOUR FACIAL MUSCLES CAN FINALLY RELAX. HOWEVER, THERE ARE ALSO NUMEROUS NEGATIVE EFFECTS THAT LACK OF SLEEP CAN HAVE ON YOUR SKIN.

Lack of sleep can cause darker under eye circles, paler skin, hanging eyelids, more wrinkles and fine lines. It will also cause skin to age faster, and lower how well skin can recover from environmental stressors such as strong wind or sun exposure.

While the best solution for sleep deprivation is, of course, increasing the amount of sleep you’re getting every night, sometimes that’s not easily achievable. These are some quick tips on how to improve the way your skin looks and feels even when you don’t get in those much needed hours during the night.

Wash your face before sleeping.

Don’t shy away from a nighttime skincare routine! Considering you’ll be going to sleep, it gives your skin more time to recover from daily aggressors such as pollution, sun exposure, wind, and so on. What helps it recover is creating a good nightly ritual that feeds your skin with actives it needs to refresh and restore. Also, while this is probably a given, avoid falling asleep with makeup on. After a long, exhausting day it can be tempting to just fall asleep but ultimately it will cause more damage than good.

Press cold spoons or put cucumbers under your eyes.

It can be difficult to correct dark under eyes caused by lack of sleep, but what can help is pressing a cold (frozen) spoon, chilled cucumbers or even tea bags under your eyes. Hold them for 3-10 minutes, splash your face with some cold water, and you should be good to go. This will help with puffiness, reduce the swelling under your eyes and give you that much-needed refresh for the sensitive under-eye skin area.

Level up and improve your skincare routine.

Sleep on your back or consider using a silk pillowcase.

While you sleep, fluid can collect under your eyes, giving you those dark circles we all want to avoid. This effect is increased if you tend to sleep on your side or on your stomach, so if you try to sleep on your back it should reduce the amount of under-eye fluid. Along with that, sleeping on rough cotton can irritate your skin or even cause wrinkles. If you can, invest in a silk or satin pillowcase! Not only are they incredibly comfortable, they also significantly reduce the possible irritation on your face.

Stay well hydrated.

Getting enough water can impact all areas of your life, including your skin! If you continually don’t drink enough water it will reflect on your skin, making it dry and your complexion dull. That’s why you should always make sure to drink enough water during the day. You can always set reminders on your phone, or write post-its that will remind you to take that much needed sip of water even during the most hectic days.
These are just a few tips & tricks you can try when you’re having trouble sleeping enough and it’s having an impact on your skin. And don’t forget to try out our recommended treatments. Your skin will thank you for it!
